I too belong to the same city. I do not know when and where the
superstores/mega malls by many industrial houses along with multi-
nationals are going to bang the city. But one thing is for sure. It is
going to be a buyer's market initially with fiery pricing. I too strongly
believe that it is going to affect our friendly 'annachi' very much.
Political parties, on their part ,have already involved to gain mileage out of the issue. One of the posts addressed to this question advises to pay 10 or 20 paises more to save the road side
hawkers. I too agree;but the question is, will the difference be so
petty? This is the point at which I differ. They sell atleast twice their
cost price. It can also be justified..borrowing at a very high rate of
interest, 2P[politician&police] grafting etc.,Another point is they
block the roadside pathways making a hell on earth for the pedestrians. If the megastore ventures fail, certainly they will not
affect the promotors as much as the vendors. Having said everything, I would prefer to buy from a megastore for their low &
fixed price, correct quantity, choice of varieties, cleanliness etc.
Wherever possible, I would buy from hawkers also. Please do not
get angry with my views. Don't you remember the fate of rikshaws we used to travel 25 yrs back? Where have they gone now? Will
you prefer a rikshaw to an auto/taxi to catch a train? For some,it
could be even a prestigious issue. Not for me. What I mean to say
is do judicious shopping. Buy from both.[ I had to incure loss from
my 40 year old family business because a distributor who was supplying to me himself opened an outlet just opposite to my shop]
Times are changing and I could feel it only when I shut my shop.
You can enjoy shopping as it should be when you are at the mega
marts..buy,save and enjoy..but please do not forget the shopkeeper who is dependant on you and from where right from
your grandma was shopping...After all, it is the survival of the fittest...Let us accept it !

Dear prem i am also a coimbatorian. do not run behind the capitalist. they just spoil the life of the street vendors ( who are the bread winners of their family). you people will argue for just to save 10 paise. but the capitalist will swallow your rupees. are they ready to give jobs to the vendors who are already in the field. so just buy from the farmers in the uzhavar chandai. ok. if you do not buy from reliance retail mart they wont be in hunger ( my id. ayalprakash@yahoo..com)
