If you are American and your student visa expires while studying in Hungary. Can you go across the border and come back and stay for 90 days (Americans can stay for 90 days w/o a visa). Or do you have to return to the states for the 90 days to restart?

Yes, it is possible to just pop over the border and come back to renew your 90 days on a tourist visa. OFFICIALLY, of course, it's not allowed, but I did it for years on an American passport.

Usually (from Budapest) I would just go up to Esztergom or Komarom, cross the border, hang out for a few hours, and come back by bike or on foot. But I've done it at other border crossings too.

I never had any problems, but technically they can refuse you entry if you have too many stamps in your passport as a tourist. I've heard about a guy that this happened to, but he was eventually able to talk his way back into the country. But since your visa status will be from student to tourist, there won't be any problems with this. It's only when you do it multiple times as a tourist that it may potentially be risky.

I think u can either apply for a longer visa or even if u depart Hungary, I tink u need to be away for a few days before u can return again.Wudnt it be easier if u just apply wid the embassy and get ur visa extended?I know a friend that is married to an australian and she has to leave Australia every 3mths to New Zealand for a few days to a week before she can re-enter.I dont know if the rules apply in Hungary.U can refer to embassy for more options.Good Luck!

you would need to leave the EU to "re-up" your tourist visa.
