Nothing can take culture away from anyone, but some Deaf people believe that this technology threatens Deaf culture by erradicating the need for sign language. (this isn't true)

Many Deaf people don't have a problem with cochlear implant technology. They DO have a problem when professionals like speech pathologists, audiologists, teachers...etc..tell new parents of deaf children that the implant will "fix" their child. This just is not true. Its frustrating and only leads to these children doing poorly in school and becoming severely langauge delayed.

Cochlear implants do not always work!!!! I think hearing parents always get wrong information abut this because they are being pushed for their child to be in the hearing world.

You should watch the movie 'Sound of Furry' or 'Sound and Furry' you can get a better understanding of the issue. I believe that is what the movie is called. There are many issues concerning this topic. Since I am not deaf I would rather not speak for the deaf community.

Deaf people have their own culture. An Implant takes that culture away from a deaf person.
Here is a deaf fable that depicts the deaf perspective.
A family has generations and generations of of all deaf and none are hearing. They enjoy growing up in the deaf community and thrive.
One deaf son falls in love with and marries a hearing woman. They become pregnant.
The hearing woman's parents and 10 of the deaf sons family, goes to the hospital and await the birth. The Doctor comes out and announces the baby is born and a boy. They ask if the baby is deaf or hearing and the Doctor replies, no he is healthy. (Negative connotation as if deaf is not healthy)
The deaf family begins to wail and cry, "Oh no he is hearing". They know this is the beginning of the end of their family's treasured beautiful language and generations of family culture. From that day forward they will become a family divided.... hearing and deaf.

Some deaf people don't like the idea they are being viewed as disabled people. Deaf people have a sign langauge and anyone can learn it. Using technology to make someone hear in a limited way could harm the richness that sign langauge and lip reading could offer at less risk to the person concerned. Hope this helps.

They feel that being deaf is an ethnic group, not a disability (although they don't mind collecting disability payments) and that by putting in a cochlear implant you are taking the child away from its culture. Black social workers banded together years ago and prevented black children from being adopted by white parents so they wouldn't lose their culture either. Therefore they stayed in the system and languished instead of being adopted and raised by white families. So this kind of thing is nothing new.

Some hearing impaired people feel that it takes away their "deafness" and uniqueness to use the device to "hear". Some feel they should be recognized for the abilities they have vs trying to be forced to conform with the hearing world in some cases.
