Because they are manipulative and jealous, they try to control you so they can have what you have but better. If your dating someone they want, they will stab you in the back and try to take them away. If you have the money to buy nice things, they'll say you sell drugs. They are selfish individuals who use others to make them look better. And they love to play the victim as if they have any right.

For most people its just in their nature, they don't have the guts to say what they would say about a person behind their backs, right to their faces. People like that aren't worth your time or the time it takes to think about why they would be like that. They just want to please everyone, have everyone like them, but not have everyone find out what they do to mix in with all different crowds, which is badmouth others when their not around so they can try and boost their own failing egos.
People like that always get whats coming to them in the end. Karma always bites them on the A**! For example, I used to be friends with a group of girls that I had known for like 7 years and when we all ended up living in the same city and had the chance to really hangout I found out that they are just a bunch of stupid, materialistic, backstabbing jerks. And I literally told them that and cut them off. I ran into one of the old group members a couple months ago and I found out that none of the group really hangs out anymore cause what I said totally brought things to light for some people and things they were all saying about each other behind theirs back started coming out and none of them liked what they heard. Now the girls that were pretty much in the centre of all that badmouthing have lost ALOT of friends as a result of their actions.
So yeah, if you encounter people like that literally just turn and walk away, don't let them poision your mind like that.

Because some they think they have to try to get everyone to like them, even if that means bashing people in the process. Others are jealous and/or insecure, so talking about others in a bad way makes them feel better sadly.

Insecurity.
People want to belong to the majority, and by getting at a particular person behind their back with others, they belong. It doesn't matter who its with or against.
And this kind of thing often snowballs if left unchecked.
It takes a confident and selfassured person to not get involved in things like this, because confident and selfassured people dont NEED to get at other people.

because if you tell the other person what you're really thinking, he or she will have the chance to explain things to you. i know that this is the best thing to do, but some people do not reallt bother with talking to the other guy because they just love to stew on their anger and hatred.
talking behind another person's back also reeks insecurity, contempt for self and cowardice..

It is called cowardice. It is a sad fact of human nature. Many people who are double-faced don't want to offend anyone or they are plotting against them.

others would prefer to say the "things" they notice to other people for the sake of not offending that person.some are just plain pie holes who loves spreading rumours about someone and they do mean to offend.
