We have a very serious problem with numerous stray cats in our neighborhood. The cats are using my garden, yard & kids play areas as a toilet & it is very gross. Every neighbor I speak to has the same problem.

Updated Info: We can't have any fur bearing pets due to allergies in the family. So, I can't have a dog. There are no cats in my home either to attract other cats for mating.
Aren't mothballs poisonous to kids?

Pour ground black pepper around the perimeter of the area you want to keep the cats out of. They don't like the pepper up their nose, it won't hurt the cat, and it won't hurt the environment. It won't have any effect on the plants, and you won't be able to smell it. But the cats will.

Make a catnip garden off to the side and close to the house easy to find. Place a few personal affects that belong to the cat in this area and spend sometime establishing the cats interest.
Soon you will each have your own garden. If you are against catnip any mint plant will do, just not as effectively.

Buy an animal repellant at your local hardware store. They work with cats, dogs, rabbits and are huname and safe. A tad pricey, but they do work. They use some sort of extract from deer urine or something that grosses animals out.

The only sure way I know of, is to get a neutered, adult male cat. The reason the cats come over is that it's open territory.

cats don't like coffee grounds, take the ones right out of your coffee pot after you used them and spread them on your garden. I have a problem at christmas with my tree so i bought some little birds nest and fill them with the grounds and spread throughout my tree. my tree stays intact and the cats stay away

Companion planting is the best bet. Also, plant indoors before the growing season, if the plants are more mature earlier in the season, it can throw off the bugs life cycle. Also, encourage beneficial predatory insects by planting lots of flowering herbs. Soap & water discourages aphids, pepper juice diluted with water discourages chewing insects.

Hot sauce. Or if you have lots of free time, set up a stakeout with a water gun, and when they come into your yard, shoot them with a water gun.
Get a cover for your sand box.
