I think snakes belong in zoos, not in peoples homes!
If you do keep a poisonous snake, what steps do you take to keep it from getting out and harming people?

Snakes like pythons of course aren't poisonous but they get to be big enough to belong in zoos.

PS I don't have kids, or a significant other right now, so I do settle for dolls and a cat.

Where do you think anti-venom comes from? It doesn't grow on trees. These venomous snakes are kept in captivity to facilitate the gathering of their venom to produce the meds that save thousands of live every year. They are kept in locked rooms with very tight security. My rattlers are only handled by experienced personnel & never alone. There's always at least two people in the room, just in case of accidental envenomation.

that same question could be asked as why some people are allowed to have children???? have you ever seen some of the conditions people themselves live in????? to some hobbyist its about the diversity in the animals and the respect they have for them. I mean if deep down inside you wanted a child... would you settle for a cabbage patch doll? and the person above mentioned about dogs, they are correct, more people are attacked yearly by cocker spaniels (proven to cause majority of all dog bites) then snakes, pit bulls or any other animal the public deem dangerous..... people dont outlaw them because their just so darn cute and cuddly...... altough I dont agree that venemous snakes should be available for every tom dick and harry, i think they should be made available to people with enough knowledge and respect of the animal who enjoy them for their beauty and quality of life.

my husband breeds snakes. ball pythons mostly since they dont get too big & are easiest to handle. i think constrictors make fine pets but the poisonous ones are very stupid to own. i know someone who owned many poisonous snakes & he kept having to be rushed to the hosptial from getting bit so much! & he just thought it was nothing at all. i guess poeple just think it cool to own something so dangerous?
but to answer your question, you take the same precautions with all snakes, keep it in a tight inclosure & if it is a biter use gloves & a snake hook. if you have a proper cage they will not get out. we have had plenty of snakes & have never had any get out & constrictors are much much stronger then poisonous ones since they use their muscles to kill

you have your oppinion and I respectfully disagree snakes belong in many different places zoo's, home's and the wild. people have various reasons as to why they keep snakes either poisonous or not. if all agreed on everything life would be boring. believe it or not, fewer people are harmed by captive snakes than by dogs.

i keep venomous snakes, there is less of a chance of one of my snakes bitting someone then a dog attacking someone, people who keep venomous dont let the snakes loose to move around people always let dogs get out .. like someone said there are more people injured or killed by dogs then snakes

first of all THEY DON'T BELONG IN ZOOS! they belong in the wild and people keep them because they are cool and if you breed them and realease you help the wildlife..
