1. Location. Is it a safe neighborhood? Is it easy to get to work from there-is the public transportation to your job nearby or if you drive, does it come with a parking space? Is it so far away that you will spend chunks of your time every day commuting? You might want to be there in the morning at rush hour to see what the traffic is like going to work from there.
2. Price. Can you afford it? That included heating and other utiltiies. Does the landlord pay for the water or do you? Is it poorly insulated so the heating bills are high? You can ask to see utility bills.
3. Can you fit your bed into the bedroom? You can always put dressers, etc. into the living room or hallway, but will your bed fit into the bedroom?
4. Is the kitchen adequate for preparing your meals?
5. If the place looks run down will the landlord reimburse you for paint, etc. to fix it up?

just remember to ask who your neighbours ARE!!

my scenario was that i went to look at a flat in a NICE area, on the faceof it the whole experience was OK, but on closer inspection the that was the FLATS were 90% occuppied by ASYLUM seekers, they never paid the service charges thus the bins were overflowing and the place was basically falling apart slowly!

I agree with kadel on this one.

You'll also want to get everything in writing as I had a few bad experiences. It's no harm to get your landlord to provide you with receipts when you pay the rent as this could come back to haunt you too.

Good luck. Hope you find your dream home!
