Several years ago, while I was completing my undergraduate studies at Rider University, the school admitted an "international student" who was a princess in Timbuktu, Mali.
Upon learning that she would be attending the University, the Black Student Union began hailing her as an example of an "empowered Black woman, until they discovered that she owned upwards of twenty domestic African slaves at her home in Mali.
Unfortunately for the BSU, she had already accepted their invitation to speak before the student body when this fact came to light and was intent on speaking in spite of their objections.
To help offset the cost of my education, I was working for Rider Campus Security at the time and was assigned to protect her as she formerly introduced herself to the student body and gave her speech.
Interestingly, when asked about the fact that she owned slaves, she justified this practice with the same arguments once used by slave owners in the United States, namely that her slaves were happy to be slaves, that their quality of life as a slave was better then it would be otherwise, and that the slaves were not sufficiently developed to care for themselves and that, without her benevolent guidance, they would starve due to the fact that they are too dumb to feed themselves.
I could hardly stifle my laughter as she concluded her speech.

The term slave has been abolished. The individuals who perform tasks for others is now a paying occupation. To enact the slavery terminology again would incur the wrath of every maid, butler, waiter, kitchen personnel etc...against you. You say you're not but you seem to have a particular prejudice against the group of people who owe. That would include 94% of the nation's population. Including those who have answered here in the negative.

No. I'm sure you wouldn't either if you had some personal experience of it. It's sad fact, though, that although most civilized countries have strong anti-slavery laws, it is still a thriving institution even in these so-called 'civilized' countries. We call it people trafficking these days, which only serves to blindfold us of its insiduous presence - men, women and children being bought and sold like commodities. Some of them have been duped by criminal elements which promise them a way to send much needed money to their struggling families. How many more are just blackbirded ?

That was originally called an "indentured servant." It didn't work out that well to begin with. I think the answer is to hold people more accountable for their debts and make it more detrimental to their lifestyle that these debts be re payed. It's too easy to declare bankruptcy.

When I hear about footballers/baseball players being traded for vast sums of money, that's the modern slave trade to me. If you're prepared to fork out 10,000,000,dollars for one, you're welcome
