Monitors seem to funtion quite happily without their drivers, so what benefit - if any - is there to be gained from installing them ??

It allows the refresh rate and resolution to be calibrated to take best advantage of what the monitor supports.

It is not a driver for monitors but a .INF file to inform Windows of suitable size and refresh frequency settings. The graphics card driver would also supply this sort of information. These might include settings outside the acceptable range for the monitor where, if selected, could cause damage or produce a blank screen which would be difficult to recover from.

Some monitors have special features, for power saving etc, also the monitor driver will tell windows what the maximum scan rates, and resolutions the monitor can handle, but you're right most monitors run fine with the generic windows drivers !!!

it may look like it is functioning properly on the outside however without the monitor driver you're probably not running your monitor at is maximum hertz rating and resolution size.

the higher the hertz rating is the easier it is on your eyes, especially over extended periods of time.

just remember, with any computer periphial, the manufacturer of that device knows the device better than any operating system (like windows) does.
