Because this is a competition where everyone has access to vote. Since most people are generally stupid, a group of large people will generally make stupid decisions. IMO, Sanjaya is a horrible singer with horrible looks. The last performance was him trying to pretend to be something he's not just to get gimicky votes.
I liked what Simon said and I understood it. It was an awful performance that makes people wince and cry at how bad it was.
On the other hand, Stephanie started great, but never improved, where as the others started a little rougher but have improved over time (Sanjaya aside).

Maybe a lot of voters out there want to prove a point about their distaste for American Idol. If Sanjaya wins, that will be the ultimate joke.

A friend of mine has a theory that everybody from India is voting for him. I don't know if I buy that or not.
There are a couple of other reasons that it could be...
One is that he's on VoteForTheWorst.com - I don't know if you've heard of that - but it's a site that encourages people to vote for the worst contestant.
Also - he was so sweet during the first weeks of the show. He was one of the contestants who got a lot of airtime prior to Hollywood - and at Hollywood - and when his sister didn't make the top 24 he went to comfort her. He's a sweet, compassionate guy. I know it's a SINGING competition - but America loves that kind of stuff.
Honestly - I don't think he's much of a performer at all - but I'm not surprised that he's still there. And NOW - he'll be on tour with the top ten!!!

Because of Howard Stern, he has a campaign to get Sanjaya to stay on the show, how disgusting, come on, that kid can't even sing.

It's because girls who think he is hot and probably the people from India are voting for him. That's a big group of people. Once you get to the top twelve, you pretty much have a popularity contest. It's too bad Stephanie went home, she was pretty good. I still think Melinda D. should win, she's the best of the best. God bless.

I can not beleive it at all. I think that website to make the worst singer win is working or something is just wrong. Even the little girl that was crying on the show while he sang was ridiculous. There is nothing cute about him, unless people think he is a girl, he would be a lot cuter if he were a girl. LOL!!

He needs to go. He can't sing. He isn't even good looking. This is why American Idol sucks. It's all about popularity not who can really sing.

I am stunned that he is still there. However, I read that there are a lot of indian groups getting together and voting enormous numbers. Popular vote is keeping him there...eventuatlly he'll go, but let's hope its not before someone really great.
