Sounds like a nervous habit. Not very sanitary though considering where his hands have been. At least he isn't scratching his privates or spitting like in baseball.

It is a very common nervous habit. It does pose some health hazards to him but I can think of a lot worse habits to have. So this being trivial, I do not find it disgusting.
