You have to work for this person. You are better off making the best of things and trying to improve relations.
I wouldn't go all out since the boss is a jerk but I would at the very least send an email or say a simple happy birthday, hope you have a nice day.
Maybe, just maybe, it will influence him to be nice to you some day.
