Definitely not blood and gore, but suspenseful and scary, like with ghosts and hauntings, NOT knives and chainsaws.

The departed was excellent suspense/thriller but it wasn't really a scary movie.
Fallen was great and it didn't really have knives/chainsaws.
The Usual Suspects, Resevior Dogs and Fight Club are suspense/thriller to some extent all are great but none are scary.

Yeah, Joyride was a great movie.
Check out one called The Haunted. It's a made for tv movie, but boy is it scary!! True story too.
Judgement Night is a very good thriller too, as is Unlawful Entry

No Way Out
It's a good espionage thriller, with Kevin Costner.
It's from about 1986.
The Hunt For Red October, with Sean Connery is also really good.
