what is the difference between a trigger shift lever and a regular shift lever on a harley davidson?

There are shifter controls that are operated with your thumb.
The thumb switch operates an actuator that moves the shift lever.
A guy I know lost his left leg and though he does pretty good with a prosthetic, he can't shift, he uses this set up.
Is this what you're asking about?

I think what you are refering to is the levers that have a trigger looking front to them. This way your pointer finger does most of the pulling, compared to the other fingers, when pulling the brake or clutch. Mostly just for looks.

I've never heard of a trigger shifter for a motorcycle - that usually refers to a shifter for a multi-speed bicycle that doesn't require you to move it from gear to gear, and instead just lets you shift up or down by pushing a button.

Some are even built right into the brake handles and let you shift by pushing the brakes to the left or right.
