There were two television shows called "Stingray." One was the British marionette program about the futuristic Stingray submarine, so the show was named after the eponymous vessel. The other "Stingray" program was a US production about a sort of secret agent/avenger who drives a Corvette Stingray, hence the name of that program. Hope that helps.

It was the name of the submarine. They could have called it Moray Eel or Basking Shark but some how Stingray is snappier.
