I GREW UP AS A "DADDY'S GIRL". WE WERE BUDDIES. BUT MY MOTHER--SHE WAS -- JUST MY MOTHER. WE HAD THE NORMAL FIGHTS AND ARGUMENTS THAT TEENAGERS NORMALLY DO WITH THEIR PARENTS. ONLY MY ARGUMENTS WERE ALWAYS WITH HER. NOT MY FATHER. I THOUGHT HE WAS GOD.
BUT WHEN I WAS 24, THEY DIVORCED AND MY "DADDY" BASICALLY DIVORCED MY BROTHER AND I IN THE PROCESS. IT WAS DURING THE DIVORCE THAT I CAME TO REALIZE WHAT A WONDERFUL WOMAN MY MOTHER WAS. SHE HAD PUT UP WITH SO MUCH FROM MY FATHER FOR SO LONG....UNBELIEVABLE REALLY. SHE SACRIFICED FOR ME AND MY BROTHER AND I'M ASHAMED TO SAY THAT IT TOOK ME 24 YEARS TO REALIZE IT.
AT 27, WHEN I HAD MY FIRST CHILD, I REALLY BEGAN TO UNDERSTAND WHAT BEING A MOTHER WAS ALL ABOUT. AND EVEN THOUGH MY MOTHER AND I ARE OPPOSITE IN A LOT OF WAYS, WE RESPECT EACH OTHERS OPINIONS AND IDEAS. WE HAVE BECOME VERY GOOD FRIENDS AND I HONESTLY DON'T KNOW WHAT I WOULD DO WITHOUT HER. SHE IS MY ANCHOR AND HAS BEEN FOR A VERY LONG TIME. NO MATTER WHAT "REBELLIOUS" PHASES I WENT THROUGH, AND NO MATTER HOW MUCH ANGER AND RAGE I DIRECTED TOWARDS HER AS A TEENAGER, SHE ALWAYS LOVED ME MORE. SHE NEVER GAVE UP ON ME AND NEVER MADE ME FEEL ASHAMED OF THE MISTAKES I MADE.
SO, IN ANSWER TO YOUR QUESTION -- NO, GROWING UP, SHE WAS MY MOTHER AND I WAS HER DAUGHTER. BUT WHEN I GOT ALL GROWN UP, MY MOTHER TRULY BECAME MY FRIEND.

I think until you are an adult, you need to keep the mom/kid relationship. If you are best friends too early I think that can make you lose respect for them as parents. However, you can still have fun together sometimes. I don't think you have to not want to be with her because she is your mom as a teenager. My mom and I actually didn't really become friends until I moved out of the house around 19/20 yrs old. Now we shop together, see movies and sometimes just hang out. I will have a lot of memories to hold on to when she is gone and I am glad I have them.

I don't think any mother should be "best friends" with her daughter. Friends isn't something I can quite acquaint with my daughter. We are mother & daughter - we have a great relationship - we love each other all the time - but we do piss each other off occasionally/regularly. I laugh with her, I cry with her, I celebrate with her & I do envy her youthful exuberance for life & the experiences she's having in university & the love I see in her eyes when she's with her boyfriend. BUT - she's still my daughter and I still have to say " No sorry - can't do it - can't afford it - or are you out of your every lovin' mind !!!!!"

Definetly! My mother is my friend, my mom and I go to her when I need a shoulder to lean on or to just have some motherly advice. But I know not to overstep my boundaries with her. She still is the person who gave me life.

I think it depends on what your family is. My sister and my mom are basically best friends, and I can barely stand talking to her. I think it's natural for a person of a certain age to be rebelling.

Yeah....... you do lose something by being best friends. You can kinda be friends with your mom, but she is still your mom and will act accordingly. Get some friends and let your mom be your mother.

My mother and I are very close. I tell her most things. Of course some things are just for me. But I have a great relationship with her and I'm glad for that.
