For the most part they are people who have lost their families and homes to war (conflict). They are pissed off and feel they have nothing to lose. Read about how many years the British and Americans have messed with their homeland. That makes it understandable.

they are brainwashed, incapable of independent thought. they are also taught to be egotistic and assume their way is the only way and that it is perfectly acceptable to destroy anyone who doesn't share their religious view. brainwashing, mostly.
