One of my in-laws just called to tell me their parakeet died. I said "Awesome. No more cleaning cages for you." They hung up on me.

Are parakeet's tasty? Sounds like you should go find out. Tell them you are sry for being rude and would like to make it up to them by giving it a proper burial. Then take the bird and fire up the grill.

I THINK THEY MAYBE FELT YOU WERE BEING CRUEL,but just smooth it over by sending them a sorry card and write a short note letting them know you were trying to see it in a less sad way and that you were only wanting to take the edge off and that you would like them to forgive you... even if the truth is that you did mean it, they cant see that you dont have the same attachment to their bird and you can atleast clean up your "oops".....

Well, etiquette demands that you empathize with them. Say that your sorry and speak about the bird for a minute or two.
I made a similar statement once and know how stupid it feels to act sorry for a bird that died.
