I've the unfortunate luck of blowing out both ACL's in both knees at 2 different times in my life.

Right knee: 1984, I was 18. Dr. was in sports medicine. Worked on Cleve. Browns and Force (old indoor soccer team). Used an experimental staple to reattach lig. to bone. It worked, but spent 4 month in plaster cast while it heled, then a summer of phys. ther. Still hurts if overused or the weather changes (cold, damp)

Left knee: 1998. Same Dr. Used a cadaver graft and entirely replaced ligament. 2 days on crutches, 5 days with a cane. 1 month PT. Doesn't hurt much and is not affected by weather.

Both times the pain was quick but very intense. Passed out briefly - don't remember hitting the ground, but immediately after. After that, just a very dull ache. But could not straighten leg completely.

Find a good Dr. that deals with sports injuries, especially pro or college athletes. Their job is to get the patient not just walking but running ASAP. They are the best and have the latest knowledge. Good luck

My friend did it and she was dancing in her backyard. She put ice on it straight away, then bandaged it for a few weeks.
