If she cant boot from the CD, then the bios is not setup to do so. When she first turns on the computer, you will see something somewhere on the screen the word "SETUP" or "BIOS" as well as which key you need to hit to get in there. Most computers is the delete key, but others is the F2 or F12 key. You need to press this key BEFORE windows starts, like when the power-on memory test is going on.

Once you get in there, look for the boot order and make the CD your first boot device, then your hard drive. Make sure you save the changes and insert the windows CD when you exit.

The computer will then restart. You might see something like "press any key to boot from CD" - press a button on the keyboard.

Once in the windows installer, follow instructions to REINSTALL windows, but do NOT format. Once the computer is running, do a backup of all files to keep. Once again, boot with the CD to install windows, but this time format using NTFS (one of the options).

Once running, connect to internet and keep doing ALL windows updates until no more exist. This will take some time and about 80+ updates and a few restarts in between.

Then, install free antivirus from http://www.avast.com and antispy from http://www.superantispyware.com and system monitor from http://www.winpatrol.com THEN your data.

Good luck and email with any questions.
