Im actually teaching a unit on sarcasm to my students (Japanese) tomorrow. They dont get it. I dont think it's only a British thing Mermaid, I think we're just the best at it, or at least have adopted it as our national humour. But, they certainly don't have it here in Japan. They just don't get it at all, the humour here is all slapstick and seems rather rudimentary and basic to me!!
People saying sarcasm is the lowest form of wit isn't true at all. Only people that are bad at sarcasm say that! Plus, British comedy is the best in the world so sarcasm cant be that bad!!

Sarcasm is sneerring or making fun of situation, person or thing by saying the complete opposite of what you mean but using a certain of voice.
The best bit of sarcasm i ever heard was after a colleague of mine came off a call with a very difficult and rude woman. His reponse was "well I see someone went to the reggie kray school of manners and got an A in being a bi*ch!"

See now I disagree with the term "sarcasm is the lowest form of wit" It takes a lot of wit to come up with sarcastic comments. You have to be quick on your feet and always thinking of a sarcastic response. I think that the person that come up with that saying was just to stupid to understand when someone was being sarcastic with him/her.
I dont think its possible to explain sarcasm, especially to orientals, not saying they are stupid or anyting but their sense of humor differs greatly to ours. But good luck with that

It involves a statement which isn't true, actually meaning the opposite. It's a cynical thing but very common, I suppose low wit in the sense that the rules are quite simple (as above). e.g. "that's a nice haircut, did you do it yourself?" The second half of the sentence is vaguely witty, the first half is pure sarcasm.

It is a low form of wit, when someone says G. Bush is a good president, they are being sarcastic.

Is that all you need for your little students who don't understand? Do you have fever with those fits? (when a person is doing something stupid and sporadic) or 1. What did you do with that money? What money? The money your Mom gave you for singing lessons? 2. Who moved out? What do you mean? Looks like an entire family moved out of the back of your pants! Pull them up dude. 3. Nice car, does your Dad know you borrowed it? 4. I've seen better legs in a bucket of chicken. ha ha PLEASE HELP THEM! THEY ARE GOING TO BE MUTILATED IN AMERICA.
Like that?

religious beliefs are the BEST form of sarcasm!
Have you ever listened to someone in a religion saying their religious beliefs???
It's sooooooooooooooo funny, but really sad, because the person in religion believes the religious BS and will KILL anyone else who doesn't believe like they do!
It has happened during the whole history of humanity, it will continue until people can:
Create a private, personal, direct, divine Relationship with Our Creator and save your Soul from religion.
Only with Our Creator's Love and Peace will we be Truly Free!
Without God, there is No Love; Without religion, there are No Wars!
"religion is Spiritual fraud"; "religion is the Worse invention of humanity" - Jesus Christ, Buddha and one who have Spiritual brains.
