My mom asked this question yesterday, and while I can sort of agree with her I do commend Angelina Jolie for adopting 3rd world kids to give them a better life. But why doesn't she adopt at least one American child? And why hasn't the media brought this question out?

To tchin- no I do not mean "white." I just mean why doesn't she adopt a child in need over here where she lives.

It doesn't matter to me if she adopts here or not...just wanted input on a pretty good question my mom brought up. I'm not bashing, and I do think she's doing a wonderful, noble thing....I just wondered why she never thought of adopting here...at home.

It is relativley hard to adopt a baby in this country! Plus a child has more opportunities for leading a successful life here in America. This latest little boy she adopted has been in an orphange since birth, what kind of future would he have. I believe what she is doing is brave and valiant!

She said she wanted a "Rainbow Family"...one from each continent...she hasn't come here to get one yet! I wonder if she even knows Australia's a continent!? Most likely not!

But about that subject, I read an article which talked a lot about how this is happening quite a bit and apparantly, there's a very big number of Aussie families adopting from less fortunate countries. Anyway, the article turned the focus on the kids and spoke about how people just think how they're giving the kid a better life, but don't realize the HUGE ordeal it is for the child!
Imagine being in an orphanage with lots of kids, little supervision and then going to a place where the people look different, they don't understand you and you don't understand them, you're watched over by 1 or 2 adults almost 24/7 and you live with few or no other children at all!
And then there's possible discrimination as they grow up...having to explain to their peers why they look nothing like their parents....
It's quite emotional for the child also...even though in the long term, the child will have better health, lifestyle, education etc.

Just something to think about really....

Good question. I would rather adopt an American child before a foreign one. I'd also rather adopt a child that resembles me. Why doesn't she adopt a Russian or Greek child that would resemble her more?

I think part of what she's doing is publicity. She could do a better job of keeping her children out of the public eye. There are also tons of American orphans/foster children that live in horrible conditions, but she won't get nearly the same publicity for helping or adopting them.

Finally, Angelina Jolie is a strange person. Think about the odd tatoos she has, and the fact that she used to be with Billy Bob Thornton.

LOL! It probably because she is in to publicity and it makes her look like a better person. But you have to admit that those kids do need good homes, and where they are isn't exactly the best place to live. I would say they are suffering a lot more than American orphans and have less of a chance to get a good mom like Angelina. And who cares where she adopts kids, at least she cares enough to adopt them. Maybe it's publicity and maybe it's just because she cares a lot about less fortunate kids. Either way she is trying to help and everyone should respect that, no matter what the situation is.

Because she knows that American children have a much better chance of being adopted than children from Third World countries. Your mom can go out and adopt an American kid - if you're over 21, gainfully employed with no criminal or mental history, you probably can too. But Third World Countries have few, if any, people who can afford the children they have, birth control is not available, and poverty and disease are rampant. I believe it's just her way of helping a little bit of the world.

I have seen that in the media. It is, for one thing, way, WAY harder to get around the red tape in the US to adopt kids. Even for a celebrity. She is trying to save the world's children one child at a time. I am only concerned that she is getting too many too quickly. While I don't really like her or Brad Pitt anymore I think it is a good thing they/she are doing but worry about them having a child right after adopting one and then adopting another one so soon. Isn't it spreading yourself a little thin?

Angelina Jolie would not be allowed to adopt American children due to the fact that she is afflicted with borderline personality disorder. People with this serious, perplexing and complex personality disorder can have their own biological children, but States will not allow someone with this condition to adopt.

Many people with mental illness can adopt, including people suffering from bipolar spectrum conditions, depression, anxiety disorders, and all other Axis I mood disorders. But Axis II personality disorders are not given the choice to adopt.

SHE CANNOT ADOPT FROM THIS COUNTRY BECAUSE OF HER PAST PSYCHIATRIC PROBLEMS! This has been posted so many times! In the U.S. you cannot adopt if you have a history of mental illness and have been inpatient hospitalized for it like Angelina has. I can't stand the woman, so please keep posting and bashing her, but she CANNOT adopt from this country if she wanted too. Also she wouldn't be able to adopt a new one every few months if they were American children also. They make you have counseling and put some consideration into adoption. Angelina likes to pick them up through a drive through window.

I have often wondered this myself and I think its so sad. I guess its the *thing* to do...

I also have never understood why there is such a show put on, when the US helps other countries in a disaster....yes, there has been a tsunami or hurricanes or mudslides...your everyday, average bombings....and its all over the news about how the US sent XXXX # of dollars to help with relief and cleanup...................what about the homeless people of the good old USA????

Makes no sense to me at all...

Availability and waiting lists

Few children are offered for adoption from western countries and waiting lists are long

The number of children available for adoption inside Western nations has dropped considerably in recent years, in part because of lower fertility rates, legalization of abortions, and the increased acceptance of single parenthood. In the USA, the number of children awaiting adoption has dropped from 132,000 to 118,000 during the period 2000 to 2004

According to Child Welfare ... In the USA only 31% of women who ever took concrete steps to adopt a child were successful (and that's an adoption of any kind from any country - not just American children)

The success figures if you limited yourself to only American children would be incredibly low. I'm sure Angelina's not the sort of women who wants to sit around for a few years living in vain hope
