Sounds like you've switched to Overwrite mode. Press the "Insert" or "Ins" key on your keyboard to toggle between that and Insert mode.
There should be a status indicator at the bottom of the Word window which shows you what mode you are in. I think you can click that to toggle modes too.

Look at your keyboard, is there a green lamp on any of your buttons, if there is, press that button, the green lamp should go out and your problem solved. If you are using an old keyboard, look where your numbers are at the bottom left or right of your keyboard, (not the top line numbers) see if you see that green light....

after hitting delete hit insert key and that should correct it.
