I think the alternate meaning of "joyous, happy" used to be insulting, but now I think of it less and less in that way. Soon I think the old meaning will be completely gone, and that'll be good. I still giggle when I see it in old writing: "That Johnny is such a gay boy". *snickers*

It is only a word, and words are only as good or bad as their intent makes them. I personally liked the word better when it meant happy, cheerful and of a sunny and lighthearted disposition. Now however that same word has a negative connotation attached to it, even though being homosexual is not necessarily negative. Depending of course on who you talk to. I don't agree with the lifestyle, nor do I agree that I MUST agree with it. However many people men and women have died to gain these rights and it is my duty as a citizen of this world to protect anyone whose rights are being usurped because of a choice, a religious belief, or a physical difference.

That usage dates back to the fifties when the Homosexual Liberation movement needed something other than "queer" or "*****" by which to identify themselves. It is derived from the OF "gai" which meant "happy" or "carefree" and later acquired the connotation of sexual libertinage, as in "Gay Lothario" or "Gay Paris".
