U.S. soldiers should not be allowed to marry, because if they are called up for active duty overseas, their minds will be on their spouses and children and not on the mission.
I figured it has a sound reason behind it, and since we want to dictate whether or not total strangers can marry the people they're in love with, why not this?

SAEide: Really? Then why are so many laws suddenly being made to specifically disallow gay marriage? Do some research. Those laws didn't exist until it became a hot issue, then suddenly, they started trying to pass them.

Gosh, so many people suddenly want to protect someone's right to marry the person they love.
Wonder why that is?
By the way, people, it wasn't a serious suggestion, in case you aren't intelligent enough to figure that out on your own. I was being facetious to show you how ridiculous it is to tell someone they can't marry another consenting adult who is not related to them.
To those who were smart enough to understand... thank you for helping me make my point.

This war has hurt and destroyed many military families.
You can't be pro-marriage, and at the same time support a war where people have gone on 2-3 tours of Iraq.
US soldiers have the right to get married. We shouldn't legislate morality in the land of the free.

Yes, and not only that, but people who are in love with their relatives should be able to marry. After all, if a guy is in love with his sister, he can't help it, and they should be able to wed. Oh, and that guy who wants seven wives should be able to have them. After all, he can't help who he falls in love with either.
It isn't a matter of "legislating" marriage. It's preserving the family unit. Three things have destroyed marriages, and led to the high divorce rate: Fornication, adultery, and homosexuality/bisexuality. Fornication detracts from the TRUE meaning of sex, adultery destroys trust, and homosexuality/bisexuality have desensitized us to immorality, which has led to MORE fornication and adultery.
We don't know what commitment means any more. Half of all married couples don't even TRY to make their marriage work. Meanwhile, because of the high divorce rate, our children grow up not knowing what a happy marriage looks like, and they have no example to look up to. Then they wind up perpetuating the cycle. (I have made mistakes, too, so don't think that I'm just attacking everyone else.)
We can't outlaw fornication, adultery or homosexuality, but those of us who believe such things destroy the family unit can and SHOULD speak out against them. We shouldn't hate those who choose to do these things; instead we should teach them, with love and patience, that even outside of God's law these things are WRONG.
Today's society can be likened to boiling a frog: The heat has been slowly rising, so slowly that we've become complacent. Now that the water is nearly boiling hot, it's almost too late to jump out.
I understand why people have such an issue with those who speak out against same-sex marriage (since this is what you're getting at). It's because we were silent for MUCH too long.
Marriage should stay between ONE man and ONE woman, who are not related. Period. End of story. We shouldn't NEED laws to tell us this; it should simply be imposed by society. It's really scary that it's coming to the point where we NEED laws to dictate morality.

Marriage: Merriam Webster Dictionary, The union between a man and woman, legally binding, and recognized by most governments. So now the dems want to rewrite history, to insert the Gay Clause. You get a tax penalty to get married. So you might as well just live together. You can get more welfare that way anyway.

Except for the fact that your moot point is baseless and without merit, our Troops have proven throughout History that they are more than capable of protecting your right to rant.

I think that if they are so concerned with the sanctity of marriage they should ban divorce.
