Why do they have spiral steps in Firehouses?

I find that many of the older 2-3 syory Firehouses have spiral stairs...very curious to find out why.

A long time ago, fire truck were drawn by horse...the spiral steps were to prevent the horse from going up the stairs!

They take up less area than a standard staircase.
