How can I get a watery-type clean guitar tone out of a small Peavey: Blazer 158 practice amp? The type of tone I want is something like Nirvana songs, you know, what Kurt Cobain did in some of his prechoruses and bridges. I might need effects pedals or some type of tone enhancer or whatever. My amp has reverb, lead gain, and a couple other nobs. Any help would be appreciated.

Take it in to a guitar center and ask the pros there.

I am not familiar with your Peavey model amp( I have owned a Peavey Classic 30-which I would recommend) but I will try to answer your question.
Turning the gain down and using a compression pedal will help. Also, your tone will depend on the type of pick ups you have on your guitar.

Depending on how much money you want to spend here's my suggestion:

I needed better distortion so I got an effect pedal. After the distortion I wanted something clean with good delay... it goes on and on. I wouldn't suggest getting an effect pedal but invest in a guitarworkstation (processor) this gives you almost unlimited freedom to get whatever sound you want. I just got my guitarworkstation and it's awesome. Every sound you hear on CDs you can generally make. However, they are relatively expensive compared to one effect pedal but you get much more benefits.

Good luck!

Gain should be minimal, EQ should be pretty flat with a little gain over higher freq. and add chorus as you see fit. The most important part is the gutiar and the amp. It'd be hard to get a good clean tone if you have a beefy humbucker.

cobain used a phase shifter (or phaser) on a lot of his recordings. i think he used chorus a lot too. small stone and mxr make the best phasers on the market, but i would recomend a multi-effects unit. a good one can be had for around $150-$200.

do you have a clean channel on your amp? that's really all it takes. clean is just straight off the pickups, amplified. If your sound isn't clean on the clean channel, you may have crappy pickups. Try another guitar.

you might want to try some effect pedals.
i have a digitech grunge pedal, which works great. i'd also reccomend their multi-chorus pedal, as well.
