I like yourself have never had a good nights sleep for years and years I've struggled to get off to sleep. I have taken sleeping pills but they make you feel so awful the next day I would rather be with out. When someone has a serious sleeping problem I don't really believe that the docs or any one has a miracle cure. Everyone is different and they only give out medication which as I said before makes you feel so drugged. Peace of mind and real happiness helps but what is that!?

The problem here is NOT the quantity of sleep you are getting, it's the QUALITY.
There is something in your sub conscience that is bothering you and not letting you sleep well. Before we go reaching for the pills etc lets look at things in another way.
1, Prepare for sleep. This covers a multitude of topics including the atmosphere of the room used for sleeping, the air in the room, the state of the room, the list is almost endless so here is a tip.
Ensure the room you sleep in is inviting and comfortable. Light and airy with a window open a bit to allow air flow. Is the lighting soft, is the air fresh or stale, light an insence stick of lavender, that will help.
2, Turn off the TV 2 hours before bed time. Put on some soft music and turn down the lights. Maybe read a book, but not a horror story or an action thriller. Something that is calm of pace.
3, Wear something comfortable, doesn't matter what it is, as long as you are truly comfortable in it.
4, Once in bed don't switch the lights of straight away, close your eyes and try to clear your mind of the days troubles and stresses. Slow your breathing down and deepen each breath.
5, When you are calmer, now turn off the light and continue the breathing excercise. Feel your body relax with each deep breath exhaled.
6, move into whatever position is comfortable for you to sleep in. Continue the breathing and sleep will come naturally.

Have a relaxing routine every night. Try having a long bath at about 9 o'clock with candles and lavendar scents. Then go to bed and listen to relaxing music or read a book. Try to have lights out at around 10 and out of bed by 7am. Don't eat or drink too close to bed time and if you have too much sleep, like the 10 / 11 hours you say you sometimes have then the opposite effect occurs. Between 6 - 8 hours is all you need. Also a healthy diet and regular exercise also helps improve sleep

It could be a medical problem, talk to your doc about a sleep clinic, where they monitor you all night. I had the problem too and turned out I had sleep apnea waking me up all night. Also could be your bed. Bad mattresses will make you toss and turn all night long.

If you can't sleep because of a restless mind, this is also something to talk to your doc about and there may be medication that can help you. Good luck!!

I have the same problem with gettgin to sleep, but got a relaxation CD recentley from amazon, which I have been listenting too, they is a day time and night time recording the night time last's 30 minutes and I still have not heard the end.

If you want the name off the cd drop me a line, I will have to look it up on amazon or on the case at home.

good luck and sweet dreams.

my doctor said best thing you can do is if you wake up in the night, rather than tossing and turning for hours, get up and do something in another room, (pop downstairs for five minutes and get a drink etc) then go back to bed.

Psychologically it resets your head into thinking its bedtime when you return to your bed, so you are more likely to feel that first feeling of tiredness again. Ive tried it and it works.

try exercising more, and meditating, ovaltine can help too apparentley, there are also sleep sprays you can scent on your pillow which helps, lavender is also good for sleep....try not to eat high sugar foods after 6:00 for example, a great big cream cake, which increases your sugar levels dramatically....if all else fails see your doctor (tell them you've tried all of the above as they might be reluctant to prescribe medication and suggest the above)
