Every so often at car dealerships, someone kicks the tires as if that's to gauge something about the vehicles performance. Is this truly practical or just something for confused buyers to do while they mull the salesman's pitch?

Doncha know? That is to make sure that it is a real car and not a balloon. If the car hurls off into the atmosphere, then you should probably look at another .
Wouldn't it be funny if there was a holagram that was realistic enough and someone tried that and fell flat on their as$?

hahaha.. I'm busted!!! I do it just out of habit. I don't really kick the tire I just put the sole of my foot on the side wall of the tire and give it a good push. I watch to see how the tire wheel and body act. If there is excessive movement in the body from this act it can indicate to me the car might have worn suspension. If the tire gives easily then that tells me the tire might be under inflated which would indicate to me the car was not well maintained, if it is a pre-owned car. But mainly it's just habit! Like someone said something to do while the salesperson gives there speech.
So embarrassed, but it has helped me identify suspension problems on used cars. Especially if I get noises back or excessive body movement from the car.

It's a rather archaic thing, really... It's "guy speak" just like when a few of us get together to "talk" and sit around doing nothing but drinking beer or playing poker. It has no meaning to the car, and it tells us nothing about the car, but it lets the dealer know that we are mildly interested in it... For lack of a better term, it is our "Poker Face" when dealing with a car dealer... One day men will realize that the dealer knows that we are more interested than we let on by kicking the tires!

Metaphorically, it can mean just casually looking at a car, like you're just kicking the tires, not really looking at it in any great detail. Actually kicking the tires doesn't tell you anything.

"Kicking the tires" is kind of a shorthand way of saying you're looking at vehicles and haggling over prices. I have seen some literally kick tires, but the only thing it tells you is there is air in the tires, not much else.
