He can take an anti-inflammatory like ibuprofen (Advil) or aspirin (as long as it does not interfere with any other medications he may be taking). That should help the swelling and alleviate some of the discomfort.

Did he hit it on something? Does he have any redness, like he may have some infection? He could have a cyst inside there that's making it sore.
It would be better to see his doctor since this is something that needs attention.

A little more information would be helpful. You could try an icepack to relieve the swelling.
