An embedded linux box is a small device with no screen or drives, the idea is for it to be very portable.

Get an old PII or PIII box from a car boot sale and download Suse or Slackware linux onto it. Four and eight port cards are buttons from a computer fair or an amateur radio rally. It's easier to set up tty's on ethernet now so a decent PC along with a cheap hub is a better bet. Samba is very easy to set up for telnet.
