Mohamed Ali (Cassius Clay)

I dont mean this the wrong way, but Hitler was pretty admirable. getting his country back on its feet like that, and commanding such respect; obviously he went too far. O, and I dont think he was the greatest man of the 20th C either, but there are so many men to chose from!
Archbishop Marcel Lefervre was a pretty impressive guy. He stood up to the Catholic Church when they changed everything in the 1960s. His followers are still defying the mainstream Church today.

Me? Just joking. I cannot name one candidate. Also, there will be many people I am unaware of, who should be mentioned. I can think of Nelson Mandela, Jan Smuts, Franklin Delano Roosevelt, Winston Churchill, Oskar Schindler and Kemal Ataturk. They all had their flaws and did things wrong. We all have clay feet. I also think the question should have read which twentieth century personality was the greatest. Women should not be excluded. I can think of Mother Theresa, Aung Sun Kyi, Florence Nightingale, Margaret Thatcher and Oprah Winfrey. Again, they all did good things and not-so-good things. They all have their flaws.

Franklin D. Roosevelt!!! The Man who came to take the job when our Country was in a very Bad State. Did what he could think of to do to Set the Country back to Normal and then, When he saw more trouble was on the way, did not leave the job but did decide to stay as long as the People would let him stay!!! He did work himself to Death and did stay as long as the people wanted him to but did not get to see the end!!! He got into more and stayed with the job because we wanted him too!!

Oh what a question! I have so many to suggest, it is going to be very difficult. I am going to have to go with Kennedy (JFK) what he did for this country politically and morale wise has never been done again. In my opinion, even though I was not even born then, it will never happen again. The magic of Camelot!
Again, love the question, can't wait to read some of the answers!

Best man? By what criterion?
"Best" as intellectual, with most significant impact: Albert Einstein.
"Best" in terms of moral leaderhip and innovative social leadership: Mahatma Gandhi (who blazed a trail for subsequent social leaders like Martin Luther King).
"Best" in terms of political achievement: despite huge faults, Mao Tse Tung, who set China on its path to global significance (but is predecessor, Sun Yat Sen was the torchbearer who outlined the path that should have been taken, but failed in his lifetime).
"Best" in terms of contemporary significance and the establishing of a framework for 21st century development: a tie — Steve Jobs of Apple and Bill Gates of Microsoft, who in the last quarter of the 20th century, brought the computer revolution to average people rather than big corporations and governments.
"Best" in terms of creation of beauty and art: not one person — but thousands, even millions, of young creators who create our evolving cuture, the culture of globalism.

FDR, MLK, Churchill and Gandhi and Ali are all great men, it seems strange to me that two are famous from being leaders at time of war and FDR helped us out of Depression. MLK Ali and Gahndi manage to prove there points by peaceful means. But Ali got his noteriety by being a fighter then refusing to fight in a war. That seems to be real ironic. But he is a great man. Wish we had another 10 years of him to help as a world leader.
