Yes it is very possible.. You can either search the IP address and you will know which country it is from. Or you can download some programs like whereisit that could get information on IP Address, Email or ICQ..

The potential is there but very difficult.
The police will be able to triangulate an IP address based on the same priciples as Mobile Phone tracking.
An IP address is a unique record that an individual computer has and as such you can be located using this.
As an example, my company website has a facility to chat live with visitors to the site and will tell me where they are from based on the IP address. If this is what a commercial company can do then think what a state funded operation has access to.

Hi, yes this is possible, from using internet sites i have managed to track a ip address to a couple of streets away from the real address, it all depends on what programs and websites you use for accuracy

Gregory is the only person that answered correctly. ONLY the ISP's can give out that information. As i am employeed myself via Deutsche Telecom - 1&1 i can confirm this. Only if the police or a court order is provided are we able to share this information. If someone were to actually get your address some "magical" way did it themselves illegally and any information they get on you and use on you is inadmissable in court. i would know. :-P
Now if you would like to know of ways to make sure you stay annonymous, create a new thread and i'd be more then glad to assist in that question.
Good luck and stay safe!!!

you can do a basic trace to see who has the ip adress ie wannadoo, bulldog, ect

Yess, one can. I saw the moderator of a forum call out a pedophile and tell everyone exactly where he was writing from at work. Yikes!
