on asking about nintendo, nintendo was the first massively successful video game company *that is still in existance*. in today's market, they dominate the handheld/carry-with market. the only competitor is the playstation PSP, which is extremely delicate, to the point where if you drop it, it's done. sales favor the nintendo DS over the PSP, anyway, and PSP is not the direction you're looking to go.
nintendo has two handheld systems right now, the gameboy advance and the DS.
the gameboy advance comes in many flavors. i would avoid any system that only says "gameboy advance" though. what you want is the SP. GBA means "gameboy advance" and the SP means ... well, i think it means special, doesn't really matter what it means.
i'll include some questions for you to look over
"what is the difference between the gba and the gba sp?" - http://answers.yahoo.com/question/index;_ylt=ApgoYvehw9JnvEsIvNlyDGEjzKIX?qid=20061103160337AAE9BEr

nintendo also has a handheld called the DS. the DS is about 50% more expensive ($130 US dollars, versus $80 US dollars that the gba sp costs new) the DS stands for "dual screen" and features a touch screen, most games use the touch screen feature. The DS comes in two flavors, regular DS and DS Lite. regular DS is no longer made, so is more difficult to find, unless used. the differences between the DS (sometimes called NDS) and the DS Lite (DS L or DSL) are mostly aesthetic, not many hardware differences as with the GBA VS GBA SP. also, the DS systems can play gameboy advance games, increasing the already large and growing DS library by the hundreds of games available for the GBA SP

i would recommend the GBA SP over the DS for many reasons, due to his age. see the following question.
"DS or GBA SP? it's for my seven year old son." - http://answers.yahoo.com/question/index;_ylt=ArIAFj53XjNFO7HY0AH7Ounty6IX?qid=20061213152917AAPwFSM&show=7#profile-info-d63005bc2543fe7d979d8a4aea973499aa
as for games...
super mario 3. the box will be yellow, and have a smiling man with a racoon tail on the cover. in smaller letters, you might see the words "super mario 4 advance"
spyro games, i've heard good things about.
zelda: minish cap is a little on the tougher side, as it will require him to think.
pokemon games are honestly probably too advanced for him, but if he's interested, red, blue or yellow are the older ones, still good, and cost around 12-15 us dollars, used.
other than that, a gift card for games might be ok, even though i understand that you're looking for a game that won't bore him
oh, *usually* getting used games is just as good as new, because you can always get instructions on the internet

Gameboy. Gameboys are portable and some of them are about the size of a notebook. Small. GB SP is a small (about as big as a pocket book)console that plays a whole lot of games. Probably you can get him Pokemon games 'cause they're really popular.

I also have to recommend a Nintendo Gameboy SP. They've come down in price since the DS came out, and are much better in my opinion. It's this little square clamshell-flip designed thingy (I don't know any better way to say it, sorry. lol) that will play all the old gameboy games, (gameboy & gameboy color) the new ones for gameboy advance (GBA), AND the GBA Videos too! It's also got a backlight, so he can play in the dark, like under his covers when he's supposed to be sleeping! lol I got one years ago for xmas, and finally my 7 year old son got one for xmas this past year. He LOVES it. Unfortunately, we don't have many games for them. We have more older games than new for them, since we also have an old gameboy color. Like I said though, it will play those too.
I recommend a pokemon game also, only because I am a huge poke-nut! lol It's kinda of embarrassing to admit that, but I love them little boogers! To me, pokemon is a final fantasy game for kids. it's the same set up, just with cute little "pocket monsters" instead of people who all look feminine. lol
Make sure, if you get an SP you get the headphone adapter, to keep him quiet when you're out and about with him and his games. You can't just hook up a set of headphones, it needs an adapter, which is just another way that nintendo gets their money from you. lol Also, I don't know how comp-savvy you are, but they also make adapters so you can use a media card (I can't remember if it's SD, MMC, or CF) and you can watch movies or listen to music from that card on the gameboy! It's definately an awsome thing that a third-party company came out with. Also, they make cases and other things to keep the gameboy safe.
As far as games... Were you a gamer when you were younger? Maybe an NES fan? They've brought out a LOT of the old school games that you may remember from when you were a kid. Pick a few of your favs, and show him the joy that you remember! Do you have any other systems already? If there's a specific game that he really enjoys on another system, do a search and see if they make another version for the GB/GBA.
Must haves: Lego Star Wars My boys have it for the PS2, and I tell you no lie, ages 7 & 5, they've beat both of them with very little help! Perfect for little ones!
Pokemon, like I said. Try starting him off on Fire Red, Or Leaf Green. It's a bit older, (cheaper too!) without being ancient. Fire Red is the one I got when I got my GBA SP. Plus, with any pokemon, he can trade with other kids, and fight via wireless adapters that come with Fire Red/leaf green. Plus, if one of his friends has the gamecube and either Pokemon XD or colliseum, he can pattle them, trade pokemon, and have a BLAST with that! It's a huge treat to my son to battle me on the gamecube, against my rare, very high leveled pokemon!
I'd avoid racing games though. I am a big fan of race games, but NOT on handhelds.
No matter which games you choose, watch the rating. Some are designed for grown-ups, which means there's a good chance there's things in it you DON'T want you son to see. Prime example, any Grand Theft Auto.
Good luck, and and don't forget to get him a game that YOU may want to borrow and play!!!
;o)

I think the gameboy just because its more tough, so if falls it shouldn't break like the DS. Plus there are so many good games for Gameboy that'll keep him busy for hours on end.

My son loved his DS but he broke it because he dropped it, so we got him a gameboy advanced, but he has never bothered with it, the back light on the DS makes a big difference. The sp is a gameboy advance that folds shut.

Nintendo DS, too flimsy.
Gameboy SP, will probably come with a Pokemon game and you won't see him until he is 21.
Buy a Digi camera, something to be a little creative with.
