My computer will boot up to the first windows screen then goes to a gray screen. I checked the monitor on another computer and it is not the monitor or the cable, anyone with any ideas as to a fix?

That means if it boot into safe mode something that doesn't boot or enable in safe mode is casing your problem. If you have your windows CD boot with that, there is usually an option
to fix windows or reinstall, don't reinstall unless you don't care about whats on your PC. Or if you have access to another PC find a copy of PC dcotor and put in on a floppy and boot from that.Good luck..There are somethings you can try in safe mode to eliminate the RAM as a problem. You can launch some programs like under control panel, add/remove programs etc.. they will all suck up ram and if thats the cause more times than not the screen will just lock up with whats being viewed last not go gray. You can also "right click on your systems icon on your desk top and see how much Ram is present, a bad sector will decrease what the expected amount should be. You need a min. of 512 to run newer windows OS. I personnally do not think its the Ram. It could even be a virus.

Sounds like you have a problem with your RAM on your computer. The RAM isn't working as it should, due to possible heat problems or other things, and isn't retaining the important memory files needed to load windows. You need to find another computer and download a computer diagnostics check that you can run at boot (meaning you need to but the cd in your computer, then turn it on and instead of booting to Windows you boot to the diagnostic disk, in order to do this you may have to go into your computers bios, by pressing the "delete" or possibly the F2 button as your computer begins to power up. Set your dvd/cd rom drive to be the first bootable drive rather than your hard drive. Run the diagnostic disk after you've made the appropriate changes in the bios. Don't just run the test once either. Run it a good 5-8 times, this will allow the diagnostic check to really give your system a good test. Here is a good site to download the diagnostic test. http://www.memtest86.com/

good luck
