Some professional sports people are victims of horrible injuries that leave them with disabilities that see them a physical wreck, and a " has been" long before old age.
What drives these thrill seekers to put their bodies on the line for a game.

Sports stars have a different outlook on life.
They have been playing rugby, or boxing since they were small.
It's a very competitive business, if you want to be the best in your field (and they do) then you push your body to it's limits.
Jemima, this is their life, it defines who they are and it is their income and future financial security.
This is all hypothetical on my part, I don't really understand what drives an athlete to the extremes of physical disability.
