I already have the survey of the lots in my subdivision, but I don't understand them. It has my house and the amount of feet the property is in each way, but it's not a perfect square. How do I measure it? I think I know where the marker is, but if I measure out from that in one direction, how do I know if that line is angled slighty to left or right? If there were 2 markers this would be so much easier, but theres just one.

Usually you will have a property iron (a piece of rebar, iron pipe, etc.) on each corner of your property. A lot of the time these get covered over during final grading or during landscaping. I suggest renting a metal detector and trying to find the irons with it. You may have to dig down (carefully) to uncover them. You should have an iron at each corner, the front two just inside of the utility easements and the back two on the actual property line.

Hope this helped!

More Info: Your survey map should have a black dot or a thick bold o where your irons are, it should have a scale at the bottom( 1" = 10' for example). Get a ruler and measure from an established structure on the map such as a power pole, water meter, etc. to your iron, convert the measurement from the scale, guess the direction and look in that area.

You don't say how old the survey is but in most newer surveys, the irons will be rebar with a yellow plastic cap with the surveyors name and license number on it!

Good luck!

There is no need to mark it UNLESS you will be putting up a fence or a tree on YOUR property line.

Check with the township or city your property is in, they will have a detailed survey of your lot in your subdivision. If not,
contact the original survey company that was PAID for the measurements when it went thru the title company.

Remember, this was already done and paid for by you when you made the purchase of the property.

Just a little detective work will get your answers for you, they are there, it's just exactly where to get a copy of them.

good luck

sorry to say
but by eye or walking it is not exact

that is why you have markers
those are your lines for your property they are made exact by the survey company
hope this helped

the other thing you should do is plant a tree or shrub on the marker site so you have a permanent marker

those markers they use are just flimsy wood and can get knocked down

there should be iron pipes or bars hammered into the ground on all the corners, etc. If you need to, get a metal detector and walk around where you think the ends of what you think the lines should be and find those. All lots are not square, mine is pie shaped and looks like someone took a bite out of the pie.

If you had it surveyed there should be markers at each corner. If your property is adjacent to someone elses, see if you can find one of theirs. Other than that, you may want to contact the surveyor to find out if he put additional markers and where they are located.

you won't be able to do it without a professional surveyors transit, and the knowledge required to operate it. you may be able to get close with a navigational compass, but again, you'll need to know the proper operation of it.
