Cars registered before 1st March 2001 are taxed only on their engine capacity. Nothing else is taken into account.
Assuming your 1985 4x4 has an engine of over 1549cc, a years tax costs £180.

Go to parkers Guide on-line and you can get your tax calculated by entering the make model and age of car. If you car is very old and not listed just enter details of a more current model with the same size engine

we are still awaiting the fine print from the red book as to wether the road tax increase for 4x4's is retrospective or just for new vehicles. check the dvla website and they will keep you posted on there.

the tax has gone up £5 for 4X4's which were registered prior to 2006.

£180.00 like mine its too old to be included on the new VED bands, the budget rise was just another £5.00
