Why is the US a big backer of Israel?

Can someone tell me why the US is so protective of Israel? Whats in it for the US?
If the US were really serius about ending the middle east crisis it would of been over decades ago.

it is a subtle form of bigotry. the thinking goes "If the Jews have a place over there, then they don't need to be here," there is also the whole Jesus in Jerusalem thing (Jesus returns when the Jews have a homeland. doesn't matter that hes supposed to convert a third of them and condemn the rest to hell. that part gets glossed over. check out Christian Zionists sometime. scary stuff) there is also the similar feeling, the establishment of a country based on manifest destiny. our country was given to us by god, and Israel was given to the Jews by god etcetc. There is also the ever present having a loyal ally (who owes us for all of their military technology) in a very crucial area.

and before everyone starts screaming about how wrong i am, I am an American Jew that studies this area of the world for a living. These things can be learned by reading a few history books. not that hard to find. The President of the US at the time that Israel declared it's independence was the first to recognize them (within 11 minutes) and it has only increased since then. The US has almost never, with a few notable exceptions, made attempts to actually talk to the Palestinians and find out what they want without trying to control them absolutely.

God this kills me. You are absolutely stupid if you think that the middle east has ever been able to govern itself. Show me one twenty year stretch in the last 100 years of peace. Listen, the Arabs don't get along. Never have, never will. Occasionally, when they take a break from killing each other, they take a look at the western world and pick a country to hate. Israel is the one country in the middle east not suffering from sectarian violence or oppression. They are a democracy. Oh yeah, and Israel does not practice the neutered politics of the west.
