how does sickle cell anemia affect homeostasis in the body?

i'll give some sites for sources, but i know right off the bat that sickle cell anemia is where an error in the coding for the protein hemoglobin (found in red blood cells) causes the blood cells to change to a cresent shape that not only can cause blood clots, leading to whole limbs losing circulation, but also the changed hemoglobin is less effective at delivering oxygen to tissue cells and taking away their CO2 and waste.

im pretty sure there are also some advantages. theres some groups in africa with the disorder who live normal lives and are actually protected from the disease malaria because of the strange shape of their blood cells.
