I'm told the Mitsubishi built 3.0 liter engine in my 1997 Grand Caravan has a weak top end. I'm told the ticking noise I'm hearing is the valves tapping because the valve guides are worn out. I'm told the repair will cost around $2000.
With 95,000 miles already on the drivetrain, is it worth doing the repair or should I just consider swapping the whole engine (or maybe just the cylinder head) for a remanufactured one?
If I do go the replacement route, can I drop in the 3.3 liter engine instead or am I stuck with the 3.0?

the lifters are only 10 -20$ apiece and you only have to take off the valve cover and rockers they fit right on the end of the rocker. easy to replace. the 3.3 has a different trans. and they tap also. most 3.0s tap. it is a good motor until 160000 miles
the tranny is not a prob if you treat it right no towing. my 89 grand caravan se 3.0 had 1800000 when the tranny took a dump4 month's after i towed my dads trailer up a mountain pass when his ford melted the tranny (3 speed man). the trailer was a 20 ft streamline. good trannys that was a heavy load 3400 lb. on a 6% grade at 25 mph for 10 miles. snowquime pass.

Always replace a Caravan with something else. It is the Lemon of Dodge! Once it starts to cost you, it will not stop.

get rid of it as soon as you can it is not worth the money to fix those motors if you did get it fixed as soon as it was back on the road you would have tranny or lower motor problems. it's a flaw in most of the dodge caravan like yous and even worse in the ford aerostrars i have had so many of both models given to me its crazy one with a bad motor then one with a bad tranny all day long their just not worth it

ONE TO UP GRADE TO THE 3.3 WILL JUST CAUSE MORE HEADACHES TWO TRY CHANGING THE OIL PUMP FIRST.. LOW OIL PRESSURE CAN CAUSE THE SAME PROBLEM IT ONLY TAKES 5 LBS OIL PRESSURE TO SHUT OFF THE OIL LIGHT.
