I would suppose Native Americans have more reason to say that then Iranians have to complain about 300 but, c'mon, folks, it's just entertainment! It's there to amuse! Virtually every movie has a "subtext" if you want to look for it. The thing is that message is not on the active agenda. All movies reflect something of the time in which they were made and the prevailing attitudes. That's just human nature.

My husband is 1/2 Apache, & he grew up on the old cowboys & Indians westerns. In fact, he still watches them. He usually laughs at how goofy they are. Because most people know now that Indians weren't actually the same as they were portrayed in most movies, it's not really a big deal. It's the same as saying St Bernards are evil because of Cujo. A person has their own opinions prior to watching any movies about it, and if the movie supports their view, they use it to their advantage.

No they were dime store novels that were easy to transfer to film. They date back to the silent films and formed a following because of all the shootings and horses.
