There really is no substitute for antibiotics to fight infection. There are natural supplements that are believed to strengthen the immune system (though scientific evidence for this is lacking), but only antibiotics fight infection in se . . . that's what makes them antibiotics.

The most common adverse side effect associated with antibiotic use in children (and adults) is stomachache. The best way to avoid this is to administer the dose at mealtime or slightly after.

The second most common adverse side effect associated with antibiotic use is diarrhoea. The is because in addition to the bad bacteria causing the infection, the antibiotic kills off the good bacteria in the intestine that helps with digestion. This can be attenuated if you feed the child yogurt a few hours after (or before) the antibiotic is administered. The live bacteria cultures in the yogurt will help repopulate the intestine with the good bacteria, so diarrhoea won't be as much of a concern.

As to your final question, antibiotics are metabolized and passed from the body naturally, so you needn't worry.

No one should take anything like an antibiotic on a daily basis as they will build up immunities so that when they get really sick with any infection nothing will help them.

I think what you really want is something to boost their immune system. Go to the health food store and find something for children. Omega 3 is a great supplement but I'm not sure whether or not for children. Alot of the "protective" supplements like echinecea should only be taken for 10 days at a time so be very careful to read the labels.

To get the effects of antibiotics out of your system no matter whether children or adults, take acidophilis and eat alot of yogurt. Yogurt does have some natural acidolphilis in it but not enough to replace the "good bacteria" in the intestines that the anitibotics have wiped out. You can break open the pills & put the powder in the yogurt or into smoothies if the kids can't swallow the pills.

Natural Substitute For Antibiotics

Let's start with certain important facts which many of us may not b aware of:
1. Antibiotics are used to treat infection and not prevent it. Infact daily intake of antibiotic leads to resistance in the bacteria and thus the antibiotics become ineffective.
2. Antibiotics donot kill all microbes. They are effective for only bacterial infection while most infections are due to viruses. So even if you have a natural substitute for them they will still be ineffective as most infections are viral
3.Antibiotics like any other medicine have certain side effects. Even paracetamol which is so widely used for fever is not totally free of side effects. But the bottom line is most people donot ever get these side effects if used cautiously. So you do not have to plan a different strategy to combat the ill effects of antibiotics - they are thrown out of your body in a matter of days by your kidney or liver.
Having said all these let's come to the point. If anything is to be considered a natural substitute for antibiotics then probably it will be 'antibodies' which are aplenty in your blood, but alas not available in market! But there is some good news - they are available in mothers milk, and so your newborn is protected from infection till you feed him and that's the importance of Breast Milk!!
So the basic funda is "EAT HEALTHY, LIVE HEALTHY". Give your child nutritious food like cereals, pulses, egg, friuts etc., and not the ones like burgers, biscuits, chocolates etc which only provide calories without vitamins, antioxidants etc. And if your child is less than a year old then give him mother's milk exclusively upto 4 months and continue feeding him yoour milk till atleast he is a year old.

P.S: Don't panic about infections. They are a part of life. Actually these minor infections help your child to build up his immune system by producing antibodies which later fight with infections in future. That's why a child gets so many infections but not an adult (who acquires a lot of antibodies by this age) !

Are you mad? Do you have any idea what antibiotics are and how they work. You don't need to take any antibiotic on daily. If you take too much antibiotic you body will develop resistant to that particular antibiotic and you will be in risk of having very limited choice of antibiotic when you will need to fight an infections. Eat well exercise and sleep well that it all to live a healthy life.

1. Any antibiotic which has been prescribed by a medical doctor, the course should be completed by your kid.

After the end of antibiotic course, you can put your kid on "probiotics" to replenish the good, friendly bacteria in the guts.

2. On a daily basis - to boost the immune system against infection - include garlic in foods, and also a cup of organic yogurt, with live culture.

First off, I doubt asking any type of medical advise for children in any online site is wise and if you give your children or anyone elses children what half the crack pots in here advise you to, you need your head examined.
But as far as natural substitutes go, what ever happened to An Apple a Day keeps the Dr. away? Oranges have Vitamin C. So keep your kids loaded on plain old fruits and vegetables. Get them out in the sunshine to play instead of planting them in front of the Cartoon Channel. Sunlight boosts the Vitamin D you find in milk. They're going to get colds and thats natural and normal, it also helps them build up their own immune systems.

Yes antibiotics if you rely on them and take them with some frequency don't work after a time and they weaken your immune system making more accessible to colds, virus and flu. But taking natural antibiotics seem to have a reverse effect on the body, they tend to straighten the immune system making you less likely to catch cold, virus and flu. For example take green tea its very good for you and combats free-readicals and is antibiotic, antiviral and antibacterial as well as a cancer preventive and protects against degenerative diseases. Antibiotics automatically work themselves out of your system over a short period of time.

Children are not eating vegetables, so it is very important to compel them to eat vegetables of (all kinds) daily in their food. Daily 2 teaspoons of chavanprash also help them to boost their immunity. Daily exercise - say 25 Suryanamaskar and 25 baithakas- also help the children to be physically strong. Avoid, chock lets/Maggie/fast food, which have preservatives in them. Be natural and eat natural.Because nature has tremendous potentiality for boosting our immune system. Daily half an hour or if not possible 3 times in a week brisk walk also help them to boost their physical capacity. Avoid lift up to 4 floors climbing - use staircase. - GGK
