I guess you can blame the fashion industry for that one. It seems to be all about social status today, and when you wear the 'label' you're in...if not, you're out.
I never could understand that either. I suppose just because some people feel more comfortable in the clothes they wear creates an image. As you must know by now, IMAGE IS everything.
Myself, I love expensive designer clothes. I just don't have a fat wallet to support my habit and I refuse to own a credit card. I bailed myself out twice already and promised I'd never do it again. They made a kings randsom off me in interest, not to mention what it did to my credit report. So, I vowed to myself that unless I have the greenbacks in my wallet to actually buy what I want with cash, then I just don't need it. However, I must admit, it's somewhat different for a woman because we can buy clothes that never go out of style. If we keep it worth wearing, and hang it in a zipper bag, it will eventually come back into style. Such as the 'low rise'...but in the '70s they were 'hip huggers'...same junk, just a new name...and a tad lower.
I wouldn't give it too much thought, though. Clothing doesn't make the person...it's the person that makes the clothing. You can buy inexpensive items and make them look like you paid a fortune for them. Take my word for it. My sister used to work for a high profile insurance company and she owned two skirts, two blouses and two blazers. That was all she could afford. And guess what?? She was voted the 'best dressed.' Why? because of her professional attitude, her stance and the way she carried herself...and that's all it took.
I believe that attitude about ones self changes the way we look.

It's is a universal law that like attracts like, and though many would like to say that judging by appearance is a bad practice they are probably the same who would not 'look before they leap[t],' because if looks didn't tell you anything, then there would be no need to see the jagged edges over the cliff.
The surface is a reflection of depth. And, our immediate surroundings to include our clothes are a manifestation of inner self.

Because people like the easy things. If someone dresses in black and has their hair dyed black it easy to label them goth. But if someone has their hair dyed black but wear pink dresses it gets confusing to the eye and then people think the person will be confusing to understand.

If you dress like a clown, people will expect you to do silly things, because experience has shown that that's what clowns do.
