I just quit my job, and got a new job at the local diner.
I have never waitressed before, and I'm totally new to this.
I start training tomorrow, and I'm nervous.

People tell me that since it's a diner, I'm not going to make much money, because since bills at diners are generally around $20, I'll get 2 bucks a table.

I'll take any advice, stories, tips, etc.
I want to be an awesome waitress

when they go to order, try to get at eye level.. most diners find this very hospitable. Don't talk at them, but talk to them. Instead of Hi folks, ramble ramble, without a stop, say Hey guys, how are you today in a voice you would say to your friends if meeting at the mall... then pause.. then go on with a smile to say the rest.

I used the philosophy, rush rush rush,. but as soon as you get to that table, slow right down and give them the attention and focus they need. Don't let them see you stressed.

ps. always write thank you, your name, and draw a smile when you give the receipt.

Flirt with single male customers.... well, that *will* work, but here are some other tips:

As a customer at a diner this will earn a 20% tip:

1. I want to be seated as soon as possible. After all, I'm hungry! If I see that I'm being ignored by the wait staff while the restaurant is basically empty I'll walk out and go someplace else.

2. I want to be able to place my order quickly. As soon as I close my menu I'm ready to order. Again, remember I'm hungry.

3. When you bring out the food and I ask for something, be prompt in bringing it to me. I'll be peeved if I have to wait a long time for a fork, ketchup, or an extra napkin. Also, I don't like having to ask for something twice.

4. Come by at least once while I'm eating to ask is everything all right. I'll appreciate that and use it as a chance to ask for a refill of my drink.

5. Ask if I would like desert just before you put the check on the table, unless it's breakfast. If I say no, place it on the table face down. If I say yes, please be ready to take my order and print me a new check.

6. Make sure you ask if everything was okay at the end, and don't forget to say thank you to me for coming.

7. Always speak clearly so I don't have to ask you to repeat what you said.

8. Apologize for anything that goes wrong.

9. Always try to be pleasant. Even if you just had a bad customer, remember I'm a new customer. Don't take out your frustrations from the other guy on me.

I made my best tips waitressing at the diner. Way more money than the fancy restaurant I waitressed at.

SMILE! Be efficient -- keep coffee filled. Get the orders right. SMILE! Never pay more attention to the man than the women. If the table is men only, SMILE!

Be kind, courteous, efficient, knowledgable, clean, neat, tidy, treat everyone equal, friendly to a point that you can be with that particular table, always serve the WIFE first, as well as ask her what she wants FIRST, know the rules of setting tables, where to put the plates, glasses, cups, condiments, etd for easy access to all or individuals, keep an eye on them so they know you will be there shortly if needed, always check on them within the first 2 -5 minutes of receiving there menu items, know the product your serving, how it is plated, what it consists of, what options they have, and good old common sense will get you through anything else you need to know if you think about it....it is one of the hardest, but most rewarding jobs if you have a good frame of mind, get along with all, from front end to back end and always, always treat people equally and with respect...they are holding the money, and besides, its the easiest part, no matter how they treat you...honey = honey.....
