Why is material possessions associated with godlessness when the pope lives in his own city in a castle filled with gold and jewels? Americans are not only concerned with these things, they are just more available in America than anywhere else.

The capitalist ideology held by many Americans that you speak of actually makes me sick. Money isn't everything in life despite the fact that many people around the world believe it is.

As for religion, I don't really see what materialism and capitalism has to do with whether or not people believe in a god/s or goddess/es. Only those who are religious figures are required to take a vow of poverty. There are plenty of religious people that I have met who value money greatly and have huge multi million dollar homes and numerous cars.

There is an infinite amount of religious and spiritual groups and beliefs in the United States and even people who don't believe in anything at all. That's the beauty of the freedom of religion.

As an American, I have to admit that there's a lot of truth to your generalization. Money and possessions can be gods, so these people are not "godless".

Sweeping generalizations about a particular country are never truly accurate. Of course there is much material wealth in the US, and many do concern themselves with their accumulation, however many also have a balance in their lives seeking to live spiritually in an abundant world.
Blessings!

Go to the Religion section here. You will see that there are plenty of people who believe that they know God. And plenty of people who don't believe.
