in the days of old I used to connect my 300 & 1220 baud modems manually. These were external modems connected by an RS-232 cable. These early modems had no automatic function so you would call someone chat a bit and one person would flick a switch on their modem to ANS or answer and craddle their phones handset. The other person would hear the tone and flick the switch on their modem to ORG (Originate). Moments later the modems sync'ed up and you could exchange a file using a terminal program like ProCom or Hyperterminal.

You sould still be able to do this with current day modems so as to not have to make a second phone call. There should be AT commands for answering (ATA) and one for originating ATD (this is also used to dial if followed by numbers)

The phone handset should be connected through the modems so the modem can disconnect the handset when connecting. Otherwise you have to be sure that the modem is OFF HOOK before placing your handset ON HOOK.

The answering modem should be activated first with an ATA command followed by the other party placing their modem in originate mode using an ATD command.

I'm really having a hard time understanding your question...

So I'm going to take a wild stab at it.

Are you asking, can you use your telephone line for both data and voice connection at the same time?

If you have a dial-up connection and a regular phone line then no it is not possible to use both your data and voice at the same time.

You can use one or the other.
