With so many people having call plans that give free calls 24/7 , how many people agree there should be an alternative "normal" number to call to stop charges being made on peoples bills?

Couldn't agree more. There are already alternative numbers, every line has to have a geographic number as well ,it is just hidden. Those sneaky little corporate needs to make money and bleed us dry you know!!!

Best website to use to find out how to get round them is http://www.saynoto0870.com/ which list you them or links into a community to find out someone who can find it for you!

Yes, this is an absolute racket, we have BT Option 3, free calls up to national level 24/7; the value of this however, is being lessened by the vast increase in 0845/0870 numbers, and yes, an organisation using one of these numbers does get a profit share from BT.

Well there's always http://www.saynoto0870.com/ it's a pretty good site that gives alternative freephone numbers for major companies. It's ridiculous being charged so much just to ring for help. I guess paying our usual bills is not enough for these companies. Anyways, the site's pretty good so take a look!
