The cowboy legend began in the early 20th century. The actual cowboys were usually young often Hispanic, black, or mixed and they lived a very nomadic lifestyle going from cattle drive to round up as they were needed. The didn't have quite the status that they were later awarded when they began to be seen and romanticized n the movies. They were a motley bunch often uneducated and often orphans. The real cowboys were far different than the clean cut heroes like Roy Rogers.
