I only put 9,000 miles on my car last year, and forgot to get the oil changed. How bad is this?

Not a major problem but I would go ahead and change it very soon. I recommend an oil change every 3-4 thousand miles.

If you only put 9000 on it last year, you probably have not done any damage.

Realistically, your car should be ok.

Ideally, you'd get a change every 3 months or 3000 miles. You haven't done this, so your car may have had a bit more wear on it than usual, but overall I don't think it'd do any long term damage.

Really, you've just aged your car prematurely a bit.

Change the oil and filter at once. You may also want to consult a mechanic and have your car checked just in case there is something terribly wrong.

And from now on, CHANGE YOUR OIL EVERY 3 MONTHS or 3000 MILES!!

Hope this helps!

check the level of oil. you might have to add a little. I would suggest you getting it changed. it is bad that you waited but with new cars the 3,000 mile oil changes are no longer. If you use those synthetic oils they can go 10,000 miles for oil changes. My car has an oil life indicator on it. When it gets to 10% I get the oil changed which is about 5,000 miles. this is per the advice given to me by the service manager where I take my car for service

wow, you need to get that changed like asap. i went way over on my miles a few months ago, and if your oil is bad or leaks out somehow, it could make your engine stop, and not be able to be fixed. so pay 20 bucks for an oil change now or wait and pay a few thousand for a new engine later. note: most newer cars will tell you when you need an oil change, and if it doesn't tell you, then you are still good to go.

Bad not getting an oil change can cost you way more than the oil change. An oil change shouldn't cost more than 30. Get it done. You should get it changed every 3 months or 3,000 miles which ever comes first. If you take care of your car it will take care of you.

No major damage, Since you have done only 9,000 km, but check whether the oil has got thicker. which means the oil is burnt & need to be changed.

There some oill you can run up to 10,000 km withot changing.

It really depends on a lot of factors. The engine type, the oil used, your driving conditions and habits. If you drive in a cool climate and mostly highway driving (very few stops) then you are probably ok. If you live in a hot, dusty area, and mostly city driving, you are gonna likely have engine problems in the future, unless you are using the very high end ($6.00+ per qt) synthetic motor oil. If you want more info, contact me thru my 360 to my real 360 page. I'll need more info on your location and driving habits.

That's really bad on a engine. I've been told to definately get my oil changed every 3,000 to 5,000 miles.

It isn't good. It's usually 4k miles or 3 months time between changes.
